Why Protein Matters for Weight Loss
Protein does three things that matter when you are trying to lose fat. It keeps you full, so you eat less without counting every bite. It protects muscle while you are in a calorie deficit, which keeps your metabolism from slowing down. And it burns more calories to digest than carbs or fat do.
Most people eating a standard Western diet get well below the amount that supports fat loss. A useful starting point is 0.7 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight – roughly 110 to 160 grams a day for a 160 lb adult. For a 160 lb person that looks like 4 oz of chicken breast at lunch, a cup of Greek yogurt as a snack, and a 6 oz salmon fillet at dinner.
